One of the things that sets Maintech Pool aside from the rest is our school.

We had a client whose landlord had hired a pool service, and the service was not that well versed.  They had difficulty getting skimmer, and vacuum working, and would be constantly juggling valves back and forth trying to get everything to work.  Eventually, the pumps and valves were left in such a disarray that the pool spa would drain in the middle of the night, and the pumps would be sucking air for hours.

Needless to say, our clients became incredibly concerned.  The old pool service company was talking about thousands of dollars to fix the controllers, and adjust the valves and repair the pumps..never admitting of course, that their lack of knowledge had created a huge problem.

Well, Jeff and Wendi found me.. how I don't know.. and they had me come over to simply get the pool running "straight" again, and to instruct them on how each of the valves should be set, and what they went to.  It turns out, once the valves and timers were all set properly, the pool ran fine.  There was some damage from running the spa dry, but not on the magnitude of thousands of dollars in repairs.

We often hear "I wish someone would just tell me how to set the thing, I can maintain it once I understand it!"  That's where pool school comes in.

Swimming pools conventionally use freshwater, however the use of saltwater swimming pools is gaining popularity. There are many misconceptions about salt-water pools. One is that salt-water pools is chlorine free, not true. Salt-water pools actually use chlorine generators.

Having a good knowledge of how salt-water pools work and what are their benefits, is necessary while making the decision between a fresh or salt-water set up for your pool.

Why Choose Salt-Water?

Salt content in sea water is roughly 35,000 parts per million ("ppm"). However, we humans are most comfortable at a  salt content of about 3,500 ppm. Modern chlorine generators in swimming pools generate water with  a salt concentration between 2500 and 6000 ppm. In general, the generator in use requires less than 3500 ppm as this is what nearly everyone finds comfortable.  Clorine Generators create chlorine through electrolysis of the salt water in your pool, as opposed to dumping chemicals directly into your pool.

Swimming in such a pool is similar to bathing using soft water. Individuals using conventional fresh water pools notice that the chlorine harms and dries their skin. However, upon leaving a salt-water pool, skin feels smooth, soft and hydrated.

How the Chlorine Generator Works.

The main objective of the chlorine generator is to create chlorine for the pool, omitting the need to purchase, pour, and store the leftover chlorine. Most pool owners are drawn to the largely "hands off" nature of a salt water pool.  When a chlorine generator is operating properly, it will produce chlorine as long as the pump is running, and the chlorine level is kept constant throughout. Bacteria and algae have no chance to take over.

The major part is the unit that makes up the generator. It is made of precious metals so that is needs low maintenance and will create chlorine continuously. Using electrolysis, as water passes over the chlorine generator unit chlorine is produced and then immediately converted to Hypochlorous acid. Chlorine creates this acid when added to water. Hypochlorous acid actually acts as a sanitizing agent in every pool. Whether your pool is fresh or salt-water, and regardless of your choice of chlorine, it is all the same. As with a fresh-water pool, the pH is vital for running the pool smoothly and keeping it clean.

However in a saltwater pool and chlorine generator maintenance will still be required. The chlorine levels in the pool will be steadier making the pool cleaner. The water will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth rather than dry and brittle. Eventually the pool will cost less to operate since there is no need to buy chlorine every week.
